Render vs. Reality: Inside Lao Feng Xiang's Modern Jewelry Showcase Design

A design-accuracy case study — how PSP Displays' 3D renderings translated into a finished flagship store for Lao Feng Xiang, China's oldest continuously operating jewelry brand.

Lao Feng Xiang was founded in Shanghai in 1848, during the Qing dynasty, and is recognized today as China's oldest jewelry brand, with a retail network spanning thousands of stores across mainland China, Hong Kong, and international locations including New York, Sydney, and Vancouver. Known historically for gold and silver craftsmanship and, more recently, for jadeite and fine jewelry collections, the brand's newest store format called for a showcase system that could carry that heritage into a genuinely contemporary retail space — warm metal tones, sculptural feature walls, and a showcase language closer to a boutique gallery than a traditional jewelry counter.

This case study puts PSP Displays' 3D renderings side by side with photographs of the finished, installed store — a direct look at how closely a rendering can, and should, match the real result.

What did this project include?

  • 3D concept rendering: full-scale visualizations of the showcase layout, feature wall, and lighting scheme before manufacturing began
  • Custom showcase manufacturing: glass-top counters, a curved reception counter, freestanding display plinths, and wall-integrated display niches
  • Feature wall fabrication: a large-format circular sunburst panel used as the store's central visual anchor
  • Custom seating: sculptural upholstered stools in a wave-grain pattern, matched to the store's material palette
  • On-site installation at the finished retail location, matched against the original rendering for design accuracy

Render vs. reality: how closely did the finished store match the design?

For a B2B buyer evaluating a showcase manufacturer, the real test isn't the rendering itself — it's whether the finished store looks like the rendering. Two comparisons from this project make that case directly.

The circular feature wall. In the rendered concept, the store's central wall carries a large dark circular panel etched with a radiating sunburst pattern, backlit so the disc glows against the surrounding cabinetry. In the finished store, that same panel is installed exactly as rendered — same scale, same radiating line pattern, same backlit glow — with the flanking glass display counters and bronze-toned display niche built to the same proportions shown in the render.

The reception counter and rear wall. A second render-to-real comparison shows the store's main reception zone: a bronze-framed reception counter flanked by long glass display counters, with the "LAO FENG XIANG 老凤祥" wordmark mounted on the wall above a recessed lighting cove. The finished photograph shows the same counter geometry, the same wordmark placement, and the same warm lighting treatment — down to the small recessed display niche built into the side wall.

This level of match matters most for brands managing rollout across multiple locations, where a rendering has to function as a reliable production reference, not just a sales visual.

Showcase types specified for this project

1. Glass-top perimeter counters Long, low-profile glass display counters running along the store's side walls, used for the main gold and jewelry product range. Finished in a warm stone-effect base material with bronze trim, lit from below the glass to keep gold pieces catching light evenly across the full counter length.

2. Curved reception / focal counter A rounded, bronze-edged counter positioned at the store's center point beneath the circular feature wall, used to anchor the layout and hold the brand's signature or seasonal pieces.

3. Freestanding display plinths Individual glass-topped display plinths in varying heights, positioned in front of the main counters to break up the floor plan and give hero pieces their own sightline, separate from the perimeter counter runs.

4. Wall-integrated display niches Backlit recessed niches built directly into the store's cabinetry wall, used for single sculptural or heritage pieces — a smaller-scale echo of the flagship-style window display used in other PSP Displays jewelry projects.

5. Custom upholstered seating Sculptural stools finished in a wave-grain fabric pattern, positioned at the counters to support a longer, seated consultation experience rather than a stand-and-browse layout.

Design language: heritage brand, contemporary showcase

Lao Feng Xiang's 175-year history is built on gold and silver craftsmanship — a heritage that could easily be expressed through ornate, traditional cabinetry. This project takes the opposite approach, and the choice is deliberate:

Warm metal instead of ornamentation. Bronze and brushed-brass trim carries the brand's material heritage (gold, silver, fine metalwork) without relying on decorative motifs, keeping the showcase system closer to contemporary luxury retail than to a period display case.

A single sculptural anchor, not a wall of signage. Rather than distributing brand storytelling across multiple graphic panels, the store concentrates it into one large-format circular feature wall — a sunburst motif that reads as both modern art object and a nod to radiance, a natural association for a gold and gemstone specialist.

Counter geometry that supports consultation, not just browsing. The curved reception counter and upholstered stools signal a slower, seated buying experience appropriate for higher-value gold and jadeite pieces, distinct from the faster, stand-up browsing layout typical of mass-market jewelry counters.

Frequently asked questions

How closely does a 3D rendering usually match the finished, manufactured store?

For projects where PSP Displays handles both the rendering and the manufacturing, the finished store is built to match the rendering's proportions, materials, and lighting scheme directly — as shown in this project's render-to-reality comparisons. Renderings are treated as a production reference, not only a sales visual, which is why counter geometry, wall features, and lighting placement carry through into the finished installation.

Can you manufacture large-format feature walls, not just showcases?

Yes. In addition to glass display counters and showcases, PSP Displays fabricates architectural feature elements — such as the backlit circular sunburst panel used in this project — as part of a complete store fit-out package.

Do you provide custom seating and soft furnishing to match a showcase system?

Yes. Upholstered stools, benches, and consultation seating can be manufactured in a fabric or finish matched to the overall showcase material palette, as shown in this project's wave-grain upholstered stools.

Is this level of design customization available for a single boutique, or only for large rollout programs?

Both. The rendering-to-manufacturing process used here applies equally to a single flagship boutique and to a multi-location rollout — the difference is mainly in how the showcase modules are specified for repeatability across additional stores.
